Smart Luxury in 28 sqm: A Compact Sanctuary in Hamburg
Designing a high-end Airbnb in Hamburg inside a 28-square-meter footprint requires more than just clever layout planning. It requires a shift in perspective. When space is constrained, every single gesture must be intentional. For this project, our studio focused on a clear objective: creating an atmosphere that feels expansive, technical, and profoundly luxurious, proving that micro-living can compete with premium hospitality standards.
The layout was the first major challenge. In a micro-apartment, traditional partitions destroy the spatial flow. We needed the living zone, the sleeping area, and the workspace to coexist without crowding each other.
Our solution was an architectural centerpiece. A bespoke, central partition unit that serves multiple functions simultaneously. Instead of placing a static wall, we designed a custom wood structure featuring a 360-degree rotating panel for a 43-inch TV. This allows the guest to view the screen either from the comfortable living lounge or while resting in bed. But the real technical detail is integrated below: a concealed pull-out desk that emerges effortlessly from the joinery. When needed, it provides a dedicated home office setup, and when closed, it completely disappears to preserve the visual serenity of the room.
Materiality plays a fundamental role in making the small space feel calm and cohesive. We selected a palette of warm, desaturated oak for the floor-to-ceiling storage units, combining them with textured wall treatments that catch the natural light coming from the large window openings. This continuity of timber tones guarantees a unified architectural language across the entire layout.
The bathroom, however, is where the project introduces its most dramatic statement. We moved away from the typical neutral hospitality aesthetic to create a deeply tactile space centered around the concept of "Green Marble".
The perimeter walls feature the rich, deep tones of Origin Eleganza Saggio tiles, balanced by a custom-built vanity countertop clad entirely in Amazzonite green marble. To solve the technical variations in the ceiling levels, we designed a smooth curved transition with a 90-degree radius, seamlessly connecting the heights while embedding a hidden LED light cove. The light washes down the textured walls, highlighting the organic veins of the stone. It transforms a standard compact bathroom into a private spa experience.
By looking at every structural discrepancy as an opportunity for custom joinery, this Hamburg apartment shows our philosophy. Luxury is not about square meters. It is about precision, unexpected functional details, and a materials palette that feels authentic and balanced.
